Brain computer interface (BCI) is a direct
communication route between the electrical activity of the brain and an
external device, usually a computer or a robotic limb. BCI is a computer-based
system that acquires brain signals, analyzes them, and translates them into
commands that are relayed to an output device to carry out a desired action.
BCI can be used as an adaptive, assistive, and rehabilitative technology to
monitor the brain activity and translate specific signal features that reflect
the elderly's intent into commands that operate any device.

Brain computer interface could be useful
for elderly people in many ways such as help control an exoskeleton to enhance
the strength of the joints, communicate with others, control home appliances,
and train their cognitive/motor abilities to prevent the aging effects, among
others. The main goal of the brain computer interface system is to replace or
restore useful function to people disabled by neuromuscular disorders such as
spinal cord injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Thus, with the increasing prevalence of
neuromuscular disorders & brain disorder and growing geriatric population across
the globe, the use of or the need for brain computer interface is also
increasing with a rapid pace. There are several ways to develop a noninvasive
brain-computer interface, such as MRT (magnetic resonance tomography), MEG
(magnetoencephalography), or EEG (electroencephalography). An EEG-based brain
computer interface (BCI) is one of the most preferred type of
BCI for studying.

NexStem launched brain-computer interface solutions named NexStem headset and
Wisdom-SDK to help developers create BCI applications. Mental health providers
can use the solutions to have direct access to patients’ EEG data. Furthermore,
it aims to provide an end-to-end experience that enables a user to interact
with an application using their thoughts. However, development and
implementation of a BCI system is complex and time-consuming.
