Duodenoscopes Are Advanced Endoscopes, Which Are Utilized Mainly For Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

The use of duodenoscopes during ERCP is considered high-risk because of the possibility of transmitting colonized virulent microbes to the patients. This may reduce potentially exorbitant treatment costs and malpractice claims. However, the use of duodenoscopes may not be appropriate for every ERCP. In some instances, the use of duodenoscopes may be restricted to high-risk procedures.

A Duodenoscopes is an endoscopic instrument designed to pass through the esophagus. The tip is held horizontally, and the patient's neck is slightly flexed. Because the endoscope is side-viewing, it is sometimes difficult to pass through the stomach. In such cases, an endoscope with a small tip may be used to ensure safe passage. For obese patients, a j-shaped stomach may make gastric transit difficult.

The FDA has asked medical device manufacturers to analyze contamination rates. So far, one company has completed 60 percent of the required sampling, and one smaller company has only tested 15 percent. Still, these rates are alarming, putting patients at risk. Duodenoscopes have become an essential tool in modern medicine. They are used for everything from checking the lungs to screening colon cancer. But they can be expensive if improperly used.

Due to concerns regarding the quality and safety of duodenoscopes, the FDA has ordered the manufacturer of these devices to perform post-market surveillance studies. These studies will determine whether the equipment can effectively be reprocessed. If duodenoscopes are improperly cleaned, they can cause infections. Because the risks associated with duodenoscopes are high, these devices should be thoroughly inspected to avoid contamination.

The cost of disposable Duodenoscopes varies depending on the volume of ERCP procedures performed. Low-volume centers will offset these costs by using a disposable duodenoscope, while large-volume centers will be burdened by higher fixed costs. However, even in these cases, patients may be at risk of DRI transmission due to reprocessing. So, it is important to choose duodenoscopes based on their infection rate.
