High Prevalence of Chronic Arthritis and Bone Replacement Products and Advancements in Nanotechnology to Boost Adoption of Bone Replacement Products
Bone Replacement Products are designed to replace missing bones. High prevalence of chronic arthritis has led to significant adoption of bone substitutes in the Germany. For instance, according to the study, ‘Prevalence of Rheumatoid Arthritis in Germany: Analysis of Longitudinal Data of Statutory Health Insurance’, published in August 2020, the prevalence of diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis in adults in Germany is 1.26%.
Bone Replacement Products also find application in companion animals. The concept behind this is simple enough. An animal, such as a cow, can be made to grow limbs that don't fit its body or that it is too big to fill. This is achieved by implanting metal into the body of the donor animal. It works because the metal is compatible with the body of the donor and is shaped like the real bone.
It is important to note that this is not true with all species. Only dogs and cats can be implanted with bone growth materials. The metal used for this is usually titanium. Metal implantation of bone into the bony areas of the thigh and hip can lead to significant loss of bone function, but the procedure can be successful.
