Sarcopenia Treatment; a Healthy Diet and Reasonable Exercise Can Reverse Sarcopenia

Sarcopenia Treatment

Sarcopenia is characterized by progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength and it is strictly correlated with physical disability, poor quality of life, and death. The main cause of sarcopenia is the passage of time and ageing, as the motor neurons in the body gradually die and no longer communicate commands to the brain. Sarcopenia is associated with functional impairments in tasks such as lifting 10 pounds or standing up from the chair and physical disabilities such as not able to perform home chores and personal care.

The primary Sarcopenia Treatment is exercise, specifically resistance or strength training. These activities increase muscle strength and endurance using weights or resistance bands. Although some sarcopenia are a natural consequence of aging, others are preventable. A healthy diet and reasonable exercise can reverse sarcopenia, which increases lifespan and improve quality of life. Sarcopenia is a type of muscle loss that occurs with aging and/or immobility, can affect people in their 30s and beyond.

Symptoms may include loss of endurance, weakness, muscle loss, poor balance, and trouble in climbing stairs. Moreover, loss of muscle tissue may increase more rapidly after the age of 60 or 70, although the exact rate may vary, and an individual may lose 3 to 8% of muscle mass per decade. Therefore, with the growing geriatric population around the world, the demand for sarcopenia treatment is also increasing with a rapid pace. According to U.S. Census Bureau, in 2019, around 16.5% of the American population was 65 years and older.

This number is expected to reach around 22 percent by 2050. Sarcopenia treatment may also include nutrition and dietary supplements, as they can play an important role in the treatment of sarcopenia. Some of the commonly used supplements to treat sarcopenia include omega 3 acid, proteins, creatine, amino acids, calcium carbonate, and vitamin D and B12.
