Polymer Coated Fabric; Synthetic Material with Multiple Coating Surfaces of Various Polymers
Polymer Coated Fabrics are engineered composite materials consisting of the polymer coating and textile because of the substrate. These fabrics are gaining popularity due to its UV resistant, waterproof, durable, and abrasion properties. They are synthetic materials with several coating surfaces of different polymers such as polyacrylamide, polyethylene, polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, and others. Moreover, polymer coated fabrics are treated and glazed with various types of polymers, such as latex, aramids, polyvinyl chloride, acrylics, and others to improve and/or enhance the mechanical properties, such as wear resistance, fiber strength, elongation, and elasticity of the textile.
Polymer coatings are thin layers of polymer applied to either flat substrates or irregular objects. Polymeric coatings can be functional, protective, or decorative. They are widely used to modify surfaces. Moreover, polymer coatings have been utilized for purposes of adhesion, scratch and abrasion resistance, barrier properties, chemical resistance, biocompatibility, wettability, etc. Polymer coatings create a layer on the top of the textile fabric to add increased resistance to abrasion. This is especially useful for materials that experience a lot of friction, such as personal protective equipment, footwear, backpacks, power transmission belts, and leather products. Protection easily lasts nine months to one year with average washing maintenance and in some cases up to sixteen months with proper care.
Thus, there is an increasing demand for Polymer Coated Fabrics around the world. For example, in January 2019, Trelleborg (US) announced the launch of Tactwear, its new polymer-coated Cordura composite. The material is engineered to extend wear, durability, and functionality in the most demanding applications, including tactical gear, waterproof bags or backpacks, and premium performance apparel. It is available in multiple color combinations. However, the polymer coatings depend on the application needed for a particular fabric. Depending on the application type, the fabrics are coated with one or more layers of polymer.
