Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Closure Devices are implantable device used to treat patent foramen ovale through a minimally invasive, catheter-based technique, which is implicated in multiple pathological states, including severe refractory hypoxemia, decompression sickness, migraine with auras, transient ischemic attacks, and cryptogenic strokes. A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a hole in the heart that didn't close the way it should after birth. PFO is a hole between the left and right atria (upper chambers) of the heart. It can only occur after birth when the foramen ovale fails to close. If a PFO exists, a little blood can flow between the atria through the flaps.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Closure Devices, such as Gore Cardioform Septal Occluder and Amplatzer PFO Occluder, for PFO closure; to reduce the risk of recurrent ischemic stroke in patients 18 and 60 years of age. Once in the correct location, the PFO closure device is formed so that it straddles each side of the hole.
