Liquefied Natural Gas; Used in a Variety of Ways in both Residential and Commercial Applications
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is natural gas that has been cooled to a liquid state, at about -260° Fahrenheit, for shipping and storage. LNG is a colorless and odorless liquid, which is formed by cooling natural gas to -1620C. Liquefied natural gas can be used in a variety of ways in both residential and commercial settings. It can be used for cooking, generating electricity, heating homes, manufacturing products like medicines, fertilizers, and paints, and occasionally fueling commercial vehicles. LNG is an emerging fuel due to its cleanest burning nature as compared to diesel, petrol, and other fuels.
Thus, Liquefied Natural Gas is now being used as a fuel for commercial vehicles. CNG and LNG are considered alternative fuels under the Energy Policy Act of 1992. According to the United States Department of Energy (DOE), natural gas powers over 175,000 vehicles in the U.S. and roughly 23 million vehicles worldwide. Liquefied natural gas offers a greater energy density, for vehicles that travel long distances, compared to CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), meaning the fuel range is more comparable to conventional fuel. This is expected to increase the demand for liquefied natural gas around the world.
Moreover, because of the tremendous potential benefits and unique characteristics of liquefied natural gas, there are many industries, such as automobiles, petroleum refineries, power plants, chemical companies, and more, currently utilizing it; however, some of these industries have yet to realize its true potential. Moreover, large-scale manufacturing companies have begun to use liquefied natural gas for heating and generating their own electricity. In 2020, the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas was Australia, with an export volume of 106.2 billion cubic meters. While, Qatar ranked second.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is colorless, odorless, non-corrosive, and non-toxic. Once it has been liquefied, large quantities of LNG can be stored and transported in LNG tanker ships, as liquefaction allows natural gas to be transported economically by ship to overseas markets.
