Medium-chain Triglycerides; May Have a Beneficial Impact on Weight Management

Medium-chain Triglycerides

Medium-chain Triglycerides (MCTs) are saturated fats and are made up of medium-chain fatty acids with carbon chains. MCTs are man-made fats produced by processing palm kernel oils and coconut. They are readily available in various foods such as yogurt, butter, milk, cheese, coconut oil, and palm kernel oil. Medium-chain triglycerides are widely used in applications such as nutritional diet, personal care, infant formula, sports drinks, etc. Moreover, they can treat celiac disease, diarrhea, liver disease, and many others.

Growing health awareness and large population in Asia Pacific (APAC) have led to an increase in the diagnosis of digestive disorder, such as Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, diarrhea, and steatorrhea among others. Diarrhoea is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children under five years of age in developing countries. Diarrhea is the third leading cause of childhood mortality in India, and is responsible for 13% of all deaths/year in children under five years of age. This in turn increases the demand for medium-chain triglycerides.

Medium-chain Triglycerides could potentially have health benefits. They contain fatty acids that could promote weight loss by reducing body fat, increasing fullness, and improving gut environment. Moreover, they are used in various applications due to their health benefits such as infant nutrition, dietary supplements, medicinal products, and personal care products. People use MCTs as medicine. MCTs are taken by mouth or given with a needle alone or along with usual medications for involuntary weight loss in people who are very ill.

Thus, they are majorly used as dietary supplements. MCTs also used as a medicine and are prescribed for digestive disorders and liver disease. Applications of medicinal medium-chain triglycerides include seizures, Crohn’s disease, Whipple’s disease, pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, biliary cirrhosis, AIDS, obstructive jaundice, gall bladder disease, and Alzheimer's. Thus, there is an increasing demand for medium-chain triglycerides worldwide.
