Machine Learning refers to an application of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) that giving machines the ability to quickly and reliably learn from past experience by themselves, without being specifically programmed. Machine learning focuses primarily on the development of programs, which are able to access large amounts of data and apply it to solve complex problems for themselves by themselves. In this way, they can leverage their previous experiences to make them better in the future. Machine Learning uses both supervised and unsupervised learning techniques to achieve its results.

The key to successful applications of Machine Learning is the quality of the training data. In order for a machine learning model to be effective, it must be trained on data that mimics the kind of results that it is expected to deliver. Most machine learning models today are trained via a combination of supervised and unsupervised learning techniques. The supervised training technique involves two methods, one which creates a labeled artificial image that the software uses to reconstruct the target document, and the other uses a mathematical algorithm, which produces the most likely solutions to problems in a labeled image.

The unsupervised training technique involves neither labels nor a mathematical solution. It simply uses raw data for training, which the model has to identify and extract from the document in order to make a reliable representation. One of the most common uses of machine learning in the financial services industry is for stock pickers. These are programs that quickly identify profitable trends in the market, following them through the history of the stock to make profitable trades that the trader can place with their money. This process replicates what happens in the natural world, where algorithms take the data they are given and piece it together into patterns that ultimately result in successful investment decisions. Recently, in May 2021, Google Cloud launched Vertex AI, a new managed machine learning platform to make it easier for developers to deploy and maintain their AI models.
