Demand for Hospital-acquired Disease Testing Increases with Emergence of Covid-19 Worldwide

Hospital-acquired Disease Testing

A hospital-acquired infection or (HAI} is an illness whose incidence is most often associated with a hospital environment, for instance one acquired by a chronic patient while being admitted in a hospital. Hospital-acquired infections are most common in elderly people who suffer from renal impairment and other pre-existing renal disorders. According to the study, ‘National Burden of Candidemia, United States, 2017, published in November 2018, in the journal Open Forum Infectious Diseases, invasive candidiasis (candidemia) is one of the most common bloodstream infections in the U.S. and the average incidence for the disease was around 9 per 100,000 people during 2013–2017.

One of the most frequent forms of HAI is a newborn infection. Newborns can acquire infections acquired in many ways, including through direct contact with a mother who has an upper respiratory tract infection (usually caused by streptococcus aureus) or through an unguarded shared environment, such as a baby day care center or an individual's home. For newborns, the typical Hospital-acquired Disease Testing include, urine and blood tests.

Emergence of Covid-19 has led to surge in cases of HAIs, which is expected to boost demand for hospital-acquired disease testing. Globally, as of 5:08pm CEST, 12 July 2021, there have been 186,638,285 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 4,035,037 deaths, reported to WHO. As of 12 July 2021, a total of 3,114,766,865 vaccine doses have been administered. In June 2021, Kerala, India, reported an increase in critical Covid-19 patients dying of hospital-acquired infection (HAIs). "The rate of secondary infections is increasing. If we analyse Covid deaths in hospitals now, 70-80% of the deaths are due to HAIs," said Dr Anoop Kumar, member of the state government’s medical advisory panel on Covid management and critical care physician at Baby Memorial Hospital, Kozhikode.

The market for hospital-acquired disease testing in the U.S. is witnessing several M&A activities. In July 2021, Nephros, Inc., a water technology company, acquired GenArraytion, Inc., a major provider of infectious disease monitoring and measurement solutions in the U.S.
