Bone density refers to the total amount of bone tissue, as determined by the bone density test, which is conducted to assess bone loss and assess bone strength. This test is also known as bone density measurement or bone density profile. It is based on the premise that bone density and body weight are directly related. As the bone density decreases with age, the bone becomes weak and at the same time, the weight also decreases.
Bone Densitometry is done in many regions in the world, including in nations in the APAC region. Bone densitometry typically involves a Bone Densitometer or scanner, a device that is used to determine the bone density reading of a particular patient. The bone density reading is expressed as a percentage of the total bone density measurement in a particular area. Usually, the patient is asked to complete specific assessments prior to having the bone density reading. In most cases, these assessments require the technologist to extend the patient's arm straight out, while placing the palm of the hand on the forefinger of either hand.

The dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry process uses a hand-held x-ray camera to take a picture of the bone. The resulting images show differences in absorption, called shadowing, between the normal and treated areas.
