Tardive Dyskinesia Drugs; Often Useful For the Symptomatic Treatment of Tardive Dyskinesia

 


Tardive Dyskinesia Drugs are used to treat tardive dyskinesia, a condition that affects nervous system, often caused by long-term use of some psychiatric drugs. Tardive dyskinesia is a side effect of antipsychotic drugs. These medicines are used to treat schizophrenia and other mental health disorders. Antipsychotic drugs known as neuroleptics are the most common cause of tardive dyskinesia. There are two FDA-approved (the Food and Drug Administration) Tardive Dyskinesia Drugs that are used to treat tardive dyskinesia, such as Valbenazine (Ingrezza) and Deutetrabenazine (Austedo).

Tardive dyskinesia is a serious side effect that occurs when a person takes medicine called neuroleptics. These drugs are also called major tranquilizers or antipsychotics. They are used to treat mental problems. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) estimates that around 500,000 people in the United States are affected by tardive dyskinesia. About 60% to 70% of cases are mild and 3% are extremely severe. Tardive Dyskinesia Drugs, such as Tetrabenazine, is often useful for symptomatic treatment of tardive dyskinesia and is currently available for use in the US.

Valbenazine, a vesicular monoamine transport type 2 (VMAT2) inhibitor, is an FDA approved drug used treat tardive dyskinesia. Moreover, the American Academy of Neurology only recommends a few treatment options, which include including clonazepam and Ginkgo Biloba. Trifluoperazine (Stelazine), thioridazine (Mellaril), chlorpromazine (Thorazine), haloperidol (Haldol), and fluphenazine (Prolixin) are some of the commonly used antipsychotic agents that are associated with tardive dyskinesia. Older patients, women, and African/African-American populations have a higher risk of developing tardive dyskinesia.

Tardive dyskinesia usually occurs in people who are subjected to long-term administration of antipsychotic drugs for any neurological disorder, such as psychosis, depression, and certain drugs to treat gastrointestinal disorders. The long-term prognosis of tardive dyskinesia has been insufficiently studied. Symptoms are reversible in many patients, but an irreversible course is widely believed to be the expected outcome.
