Specific Aneurysm Clips Made From Stainless Steel Alloy Unsafe For Patients in MR Environment

 


Clipping is a surgery performed to treat an aneurysm, a ballooning and weakened area in an artery. As an aneurysm grows it can become so thin that it leaks or ruptures, releasing blood into the spaces around the brain. Aneurysm Clips are non-ferromagnetic and may be safely exposed to MRI. The clip or clips will stay in place permanently. The clips are supplied sterile and ready to use. There are four major clip designs that are currently available in the market, and these are the McFadden Vari-Angle, Sundt Slim-Line, and Sugita and Yasargil type clips.

A small metal clip is used to stop blood flow into the aneurysm during microsurgical clipping. A craniotomy is performed to create an opening in the skull to reach the aneurysm in the brain. Aneurysm Clips are placed on the neck (opening) of the aneurysm to obstruct the flow of blood, and remains inside the brain. A successfully applied clip for a ruptured aneurysm keeps the aneurysm's neck closed, preventing rerupture throughout the patient's life.

According to a data published by the Brain Aneurysm Foundation in 2020, around 6.5 million people suffer from unruptured brain aneurysm in the U.S. The cases account for around 1 in 50 people. The condition also leads to around 500,000 deaths worldwide, annually. Such high prevalence of aneurysm boosts demand for Aneurysm Clips. Moreover, increasing geriatric population is also expected to boost demand for these clips.

The presence of an intracranial aneurysm clip in a patient or individual in the MR environment represents a potentially hazardous situation. Specific aneurysm clips made from stainless steel alloy and Phynox may be unsafe for patients or individuals in an 8.0 T MR environment.
