Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) Treatment has improved significantly with regular product approval and occupational therapies

 


Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a type of inherited muscle-related disorder that is largely prevalent in children. The majority of people with this condition are Italian Americans. The symptoms of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) include extreme facial pain, asymmetry, and floppy muscles that respond negatively to no amount of stimulus. Affected individuals can also exhibit an inability to gain weight or maintain a normal posture. There is currently no known cure for this type of muscular dystrophy.

However, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) Treatment will help to prolong the period a person has to live with it, improve overall muscle weakness, and increase the time a person can remain independent. Treatment options include medicinal therapies, therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, and physical therapy. Depending on the severity of symptoms, treatment may be based on symptoms and cause of Duchenne muscular dystrophy and the success rate of each therapeutic trial. Medicines used to treat this disorder can be either anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin and ibuprofen, or analgesics such as acetaminophen and naproxen, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). There are also drugs that have the property to modulate protein channels and encourage muscle fibrosis, such as cyclosporine and methotrexate.

Currently, there are no clinical trials examining the use of therapeutic steroids in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. However, there are ongoing studies evaluating the effects of steroids on patients with advanced muscle degeneration caused by Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Based on the results of these studies, doctors may suggest the use of corticosteroids in the future. It is important to remember, though, that even if treatment does prove effective, it is unlikely that it will be recommended for patients suffering from severe forms of this disease. Recently, in February 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Sarepta Therapeutics, Inc.’s Amondys 45 injection for the Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) treatment.
