Freight forwarders act as the middleman for companies that need to ship bulk orders overseas. They simplify the process by preparing all documentation, booking flights, negotiating rates and making payments on behalf of their clients. They also manage warehousing solutions and communicate with their clients about the status of their shipments.

Freight Forwarding is a broad field that can vary greatly from one provider to the next. For example, some specialize as air freight forwarders and don’t handle ocean or land shipping at all. Others are essentially trucking or logistics brokers with a small network of international carriers they work closely with. Larger freight forwarders can offer a full range of services across the globe.

Negotiating rates and working with multiple airlines and ocean freight carriers is a huge part of the job. This involves juggling variables like cargo type, time flexibility, credit standing and space/tonnage requirements. Freight forwarders often spend a lot of time on the phone with these companies trying to secure the best rates for their customers.

Some freight forwarders will also be able to negotiate the terms of the contract between the shipper and the carrier. This can be a complex task that requires knowledge of international shipping regulations, customs rules and tariffs. A good Freight Forwarding is fluent in all of these issues and can make the entire process much easier for their clients.

In some cases, the freight forwarder will need to house their client’s goods at a warehouse that is owned by them or an affiliate. This could be for a number of reasons, including trade show shipments that need storage between shows or shipments that are awaiting consolidation. In other cases, the freight forwarder’s clients may never need their storage services and only require their help in planning, executing and tracking their shipments.
