Orthokeratology Is Advancing With Increasing Research In Recent Years For Efficiently Eliminating Or Reducing Need For Corrective Lenses

Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology is a non-invasive treatment that can eliminate or dramatically reduce the need for corrective lenses. It's a great option for people who aren't ready for LASIK or who don't want to go through the risks and side effects of laser eye surgery. Orthokeratology, also called ortho-k or corneal reshaping, is the use of special rigid gas permeable contact lenses that are worn overnight to reshape the front surface of the eye, making it less likely to become myopic (nearsighted) or hyperopic (farsighted). The treatment works by slowly changing the shape of the eye to increase the amount of clear vision available for near objects.

Often, patients who wear glasses and contacts for their eyesight will have the same problem. These are called refractive errors and include myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia. The best candidates for Orthokeratology are those who have moderate to severe nearsightedness, or are considering a more advanced treatment such as LASIK. Myopia is a common problem that can lead to serious eye health issues. High myopia increases the risk of retinal detachment, macular degeneration, glaucoma and other eye diseases that can cause loss of the vision. This is especially true for a young child.

In recent years, research has shown that using a specific type of rigid gas permeable lens and a certain fitting technique can greatly slow the progression of childhood myopia. In fact, orthokeratology has one of the strongest research pedigrees of all myopia control options.

There are many reasons why people choose orthokeratology over LASIK. First, Orthokeratology is reversible. If one decides to undergo LASIK later, they can reverse their ortho-k treatments and have their eye doctor reshape their corneas back to their original shape before surgery. Another benefit of orthokeratology is that it's safe, reversible and very effective. It's a great option for those who have mild to moderate refractive errors such as myopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. Recently, in September 2021, Scotlens, a leading contact lens company entered into collaboration with Avizor for the launch of novel unboxing experience for ortho-K night lenses, which aims at encouraging the option among public.
