Polyethylene Terephthalate Is Used For Insulation In Electrical Appliances And For Making A Variety Of Accessories Like Wiper Arms, Gear Housing And Engine Covers
Polyethylene Terephthalate |
Polyethylene Terephthalate is a clear, lightweight and strong
plastic that's widely used for countless packaging applications. PET can be
found in bottles and containers for everything from water to juice to peanut
butter and cooking oil. It is also used to make clamshell packaging, plastic
bags and more.
It is a member of the polyester family of polymers and is
one of the most important raw materials for man-made fibers. It is used to make
fibers for clothing, bottles and food containers and is also often combined
with glass fiber for engineering resins.
Depending on its processing and thermal history, it may
exist as an amorphous or semi-crystalline polymer. Amorphous Polyethylene Terephthalate may be
transparent or opaque and white.
In the manufacturing process, small amounts of comonomers
can be added to slow crystallization, such as isophthalic acid. This
modification creates a kink in the terephthalic acid chain, which interferes
with crystallization and lowers the melting point of PET.
It is also often modified with other comonomers, such as
diethylene glycol or ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, to improve its strength
and stiffness. This modification is useful for certain molding applications,
such as making tray or blister packaging from co-PET film or amorphous PET
sheet.
A common modifier for Polyethylene
Terephthalate is isophthalic acid, this replaces some of the 1,4-(para-)
linked terephthalate units. This stoichiometry makes the polymer more elastic
and can be used to create a smooth, glossy surface on bottle walls.
Other modifications can be made to increase the mechanical
strength of the PET film, such as adding a hardener or a heat-set agent. These
can add additional strength to the material and make it more suitable for
high-pressure tape applications, which require a strong carrier that will not
break easily.
Polyethylene Terephthalate can also be used to make flexible
films that are molded into a variety of shapes. These are sometimes used in 3D
printing, where the flexing of the PET film allows for a wide range of shapes
and sizes.
Another important application of Polyethylene Terephthalate is for its use in medical devices,
especially large-diameter vascular prostheses. The polymer's excellent chemical
stability and suturability ensure that the device will not be compromised over
time, even if it's subjected to pressure from an arterial blockage or other
injury.
A Vietnamese PET converter, NN was proposed to be acquired
by Indorama Ventures in January 2022. This acquisition will assist IVL in
strengthening their position in the market.
