Cement Board Is A Popular Building Material Used Under Tile Installed On Walls, Floors, And Countertops

Cement Board

Cement Board is a type of wall or floor sheathing that's made from Portland cement, aggregate, and fiberglass mesh. It's designed to withstand moisture, but it's also easy to install. It's used for interior and exterior applications, especially showers and tub surrounds. Cement board is a common building material that's often used under tile installed on floors, walls, and countertops. It's slightly more expensive than drywall but it's worth it to avoid cracked tiles and a messy job in the future.  They're ideal for truly wet locations, including shower surrounds and areas where a Portland cement-based thin-set mortar is applied to bond tile or stone surfaces.

The Cement Board panels can also be waterproofed by the application of a liquid or membrane-based sealant. It is highly water resistant and dries quickly after exposure to moisture. This means it can withstand showers and other moisture-related activities without degrading, which is important for areas where the tile will be installed.

The material consists of unbleached cellulose fibers that are re-pulped in water, refined, and mixed with cement, silica, and other additives to form sheets. The resulting sheets are then pressed onto a wiring substrate and cured to create cement boards. In addition to being water resistant, it is also fire retardant. This helps protect against structural damage from a fire, which is especially critical for bathrooms and other rooms where the tile will be installed. A more traditional approach to tiling involves using expanded metal lath, which comes in sheets. Installers fasten it to the wall before applying mortar. This allows the cement scratch coat to remain in place and reduces the risk of future issues.

Besides the cost savings, it's also a greener option for remodelers and homeowners alike because there's no need to mix the mortar on-site. It's also a more efficient and reliable way to lay tile because it eliminates the need for a mud-set base that can be difficult to re-set.
