Cancer Therapy Is Advancing With Increasing Research And Development Activities In The Field
Cancer Therapy |
Cancer Therapy is a broad term that includes a
number of different treatment options. It involves treatments that destroy
cancer cells and inhibit the growth of new ones. Some of these therapies
include chemotherapy, radiation and hormone therapy. Moreover, new targeted anti-cancer
drugs are under development. Targeted cancer therapies work by blocking
messages sent by proteins that make cancer cells grow. These therapies have
proved highly effective and have led to improved survival for some cancers. The
challenge now is to reduce the side effects that may occur from them.
Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are two of the most
widely used cancer treatments. These therapies are designed to kill cancer
cells and damage the normal, healthy cells that surround them. However, they
can cause serious adverse effects on the non-cancerous tissues. During these
treatments, the body can suffer from nausea, vomiting, hair loss, skin changes,
and more.
Surgery is also a common method of Cancer
Therapy. It removes the mass of cancerous cells from the body
and relieves the symptoms associated with the disease. This is especially
important if the primary tumor is found to be large. When the cancer recurs, it
is known as metastatic. Surgical excision is not always possible, however.
Radiation therapy has been used for over a hundred years to
treat cancer. It is usually given as daily doses of 2 Gy. Various fractions are
used to target specific areas of the body and limit the harm to nearby healthy
tissue. Many of the newer technologies involve stereotactic techniques that
offer more accurate dose matching.
New Cancer Therapy techniques
are a result of improvements in our understanding of the biology of cancer. New
drugs, such as the immune-stimulating agent cytokines, have been developed to
increase the response of the immune system to cancer.
Along with these new types of cancer therapy, there are a
number of drug and surgical treatments available. Conventional cytotoxic
chemotherapy and radiation therapy are common treatments for many types of
cancer. Although these treatments have achieved some success, their side
effects are significant. In October 2022, Johnson & Johnson’s received
approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for its treatment
teclistamab, branded as Tecvayli for a type of multiple myeloma.
