exam, the health care provider looks inside the patient's ear with an Otoscope. The otoscope is a handheld
device that magnifies small areas of the ear. It has a light source on the
front and a low-power magnifying lens on the rear. The health care provider can
examine the inside of the eardrum, ear canal, and other areas with the otoscope.
Otoscopy is
often performed in the outpatient setting. The health care provider will gently
pull the auricle backwards, and then place the Otoscope tip into the ear. The health care
provider will then examine the eardrum, auricle, and ear canal. They may need
to dim the light or use a binocular microscope to look inside the ear. The
health care provider may also need to remove earwax or cerumen.
There are
