During an ear exam, the health care provider looks inside the patient's ear with an Otoscope. The otoscope is a handheld device that magnifies small areas of the ear. It has a light source on the front and a low-power magnifying lens on the rear. The health care provider can examine the inside of the eardrum, ear canal, and other areas with the otoscope.

Otoscopy is often performed in the outpatient setting. The health care provider will gently pull the auricle backwards, and then place the Otoscope tip into the ear. The health care provider will then examine the eardrum, auricle, and ear canal. They may need to dim the light or use a binocular microscope to look inside the ear. The health care provider may also need to remove earwax or cerumen.

There are several models of otoscopes. They come in different colors and sizes and are battery operated or wall mounted. Some models include a binocular microscope, which can be used to view inside the eardrum. Otoscope can also be used to examine the upper throat. This is especially useful in diagnosing nasal disorders. Otoscopy has not changed much over the last few hundred years.

The early otoscopes were not designed for viewing the middle ear. They were essentially a penlight and a magnifying glass. The otoscope became a common instrument in the medical community. These early otoscopes were used to examine nasal passages and aural passages. The Otoscope was also used to examine earwax and other foreign bodies.

The health care provider can then examine the eardrum for perforation, color, and bulging.

These speculums are used to provide maximum illumination of the ear anatomy. They are also used for nasal and upper throat examinations. The speculum allows the health care provider to view many angles of the ear and allows for optimal visualization of the ear anatomy.
