Using the power of the wind in the sea is a powerful way to generate electricity. Offshore wind power is a renewable energy source and can be harnessed using a variety of technologies. Depending on the region and the site, offshore wind energy can be used to generate electricity in land-constrained areas. The energy produced is considered more reliable and efficient than that produced by onshore wind farms. Offshore Wind Energy also provides a cost-effective alternative to long-distance transmission of electricity.

Despite the potential for developing Offshore Wind Energy, there are many challenges. These challenges include market barriers, environmental and logistical issues, and unique siting challenges. In response to these challenges, the U.S. Department of Energy is working to develop technologies to overcome these challenges. It has also committed to engaging with stakeholders and underserved communities. Along with its research efforts, the Department is working to demonstrate advanced technologies.

There are three major types of offshore wind farms: fixed-bottom, floating, and multi-purpose. Fixed-bottom offshore wind farms use monopile foundations to support large above-surface structures. These foundations may be steel, concrete, or gravity base foundations. The design of these foundations is based on the site's wave loading. They can be used in shallow water or in deeper water.

Multi-purpose offshore wind facilities are designed to allow clusters of offshore wind farms to be connected in one go. These facilities will allow for a more efficient transmission of electricity between offshore wind farms. Floating offshore wind facilities, on the other hand, use anchors to keep their turbines in place.

Offshore Wind Energy turbines are exposed to salt water spray and humidity, which can lead to corrosion and oxidation. These impacts can also increase maintenance and service costs. The wind speed at the turbine tip can also affect corrosion and oxidation. Moreover, offshore wind farms require higher levels of redundancy and reliability. In October 2022, Mubdala Investment Company, the sovereign investor based in Abu Dhabi announced the acquisition of a stake in Skyborn Renewables, which is the largest developer in the world of offshore wind.
