However, a limited supply of sugar was available in Europe during this period. The Venetians brought about a major change during the 14th century by importing sugar from Arabia. By the 16th century, confectioners began molding boiled sugar with fruit and nuts into fanciful shapes. In the late eighteenth century, candies manufacturing machinery was developed and was widespread.

Chocolate-coated cream candies were popular in the late 19th century. This combination of flavors led to the name chocolate truffle. The finished product was shaped to resemble an expensive fungus. The popularity of chocolate-coated candies has boosted the chocolate industry. It has also become a popular movie concession treat. Despite their health risks, chocolate and other sweets are good for the diet.
