Drug Delivery is referred as transfer of a
pharmaceutical compound (medicine) into the body for the therapeutic effect
(treatment). A novel drug delivery system can be defined as a new approach that
uses innovative methods to safely deliver pharmaceutical compounds into the
body necessary to achieve desired therapeutic effects (treatment). Slow
processing, as well as side effects, of traditional drug therapy are
contributing to the emergence of the concept of novel drug delivery systems.
For the treatment of human diseases, nasal
and pulmonary routes of drug delivery are gaining increasing importance. Drug delivery refers
to the technology utilized to present the drug to the desired body site for the
drug release and absorption. Nasal drug delivery has been used as an
alternative route for the systemic availability of drugs restricted to
intravenous administration. Pharmaceutical
Drug Delivery is also used for the treatment of allergic and
non-allergic rhinitis, acute treatment of migraine, pain, and nasal congestion
associated with common cold, rhinitis, or sinusitis.
Nasal route has shown remarkable advantages that include rapid and high
systemic availability, possibility of targeting drugs directly from the nasal
cavity to brain, and avoidance of first pass metabolism by the liver.
Intranasal drug delivery (or nasal drug delivery) offers a rapid onset of
therapeutic effects (local and/or systemic). Pulmonary
drug delivery is used to deliver the drug to treat respiratory diseases.
Nebulizers, dry powder inhalers, and pressurized metered-dose inhalers are used
in pulmonary drug delivery.
The pulmonary route is used to take the
drug through the respiratory tract. Pharmaceutical
Drug Delivery helps increase the availability of drugs, reduce drug
degradation, and prevent harmful side effects of drugs. Moreover, the system
enhance drug absorption, efficacy, and the patient experience. However, the
development of drugs and medical devices follows well-established paths to make
sure that they are safe and effective when they reach the public. Thus, U.S.
FDA is speeding up the approval process for drugs and medical devices.
