Subsea Umbilicals, Risers and Flowlines (SURF) Have Become Important In Offshore Production of Oil and Gas

Subsea Umbilicals are crucial offshore connections. These connections must withstand massive pressure and extreme conditions. To meet the demanding requirements, they are made from high-performance polymers like Arkema's Rilsan PA11, which has excellent corrosive-resistance properties. Rilsan PA11 is a great example of a high-performance polymer for offshore applications.

In an effort to meet the increasing demand for subsea umbilicals and flowlines, oil and gas companies are increasingly turning to innovative and customized solutions. Among these solutions are subsea umbilicals, which are essentially pipe systems that attach to the surface of the ocean. These are also known as SURFs, and they help facilitate the connection between the surface of an offshore drilling platform and the subsea production unit.

Subsea umbilicals, risers, and flowlines (SURF) are crucial in offshore oil and gas production. These products are used to connect the various production centers and transport the produced fluids. SURFs and flowlines must withstand high temperatures, mechanical stress, and high pressures. A robust and dependable system is required for a successful offshore oil and gas extraction.

Besides providing connectivity between onshore equipment and subsea equipment, umbilicals also contribute to the value of the oil and gas industry. Subsea umbilicals are available in static and dynamic versions. The depth of oil and gas fields has fueled the demand for dynamic umbilicals. The raw materials used for subsea umbilicals also vary, with some hoses made of steel tubes while others are made from composite materials.

Oil industry activity in the offshore oil and gas sector has accelerated over the last few years. New platforms are being built across the globe to operate in deeper waters. Reliable oil extraction requires safe interconnection between various centers of operation. Subsea umbilicals, risers, and flowlines (SURF)s, risers, and flowlines play an essential role in this interconnection process. The requisite specifications of the components ensure optimum performance under high temperatures, pressures, and mechanical stresses. Recently in February 2022, JDR, a subsea umbilical supplier was rewarded a contract from oil and gas firm beach energy for delivering subsea umbilicals for the otway basin, offshore Victoria, Australia.
