In-Flight Wi-Fi is a key driver in building both customer loyalty and satisfaction among today's airline passengers around the world. In-flight Wi-Fi services rely on geostationary satellites which beam signals directly to antennas installed on the airline. With satellite powered Wi-Fi, planes connect to the internet using an antenna mounted on top of the plane. Besides using a different frequency than cell towers, satellite-powered Wi-Fi services allow planes to provide faster service and can be used by airline passengers.

The pilot-in-command may permit the access of Internet services by passengers on board an aircraft through Wi-Fi on board, when smartphone, Smartwatch, laptop, tablet, e-reader, and/or a point of sale device is used in flight mode or airplane mode. While majority of airlines charge passengers to connect to the Internet, there are many ways to get free Wi-Fi, from flying one of the few airlines that offers free In-Flight Wi-Fi to taking advantage of elite status to connect for free. However, it depends on the airline people are flying with.

Many airlines, like British Airways, offer WiFi for a small fee, but there are a handful of airlines that have free WiFi onboard, like Emirates and Turkish Airlines. JetBlue is a U.S. airline that provides free Wi-Fi for all passengers. All passengers can get free, unlimited Wi-Fi on flights and bypass paywalls through the JetBlue's Fly-Fi product. Moreover, in April 2022, American Airlines announced that it will be offering its passengers a special new in-flight perk; free in-flight WiFi on many of its flights for the next month.

Long flights are one of the worst times to be disconnected from the internet. Fortunately, more and more airlines worldwide are now offering in-flight Wi-Fi, allowing passengers to connect to the Internet. In short, in-flight Wi-Fi refers to the onboard internet service offered by airlines to business and commercial aircraft passengers.
