Healthcare Information Technology Services Improves the Quality and Effectiveness of Health Care

Healthcare
Information Technology Services are applied to
health and health care to support the health information management across
computerized systems and secure exchange of health information between
providers, consumers, and quality monitors. The term ‘health information
technology (health IT)’ refers to the electronic systems health care
professionals use to store, share, and analyze health information. Healthcare
information technology services refers to a system designed to manage
healthcare data. This includes systems that collect, store, manage and transmit
a hospital's operational management, a patient's electronic medical record
(EMR), or a system supporting healthcare policy decisions.
Healthcare
Information Technology Services is the area of healthcare that oversees the
technology systems healthcare providers use to manage patient data. Its focus is always on maintaining
patient privacy while improving patient care. Healthcare IT offers numerous
advantages and opportunities such as facilitating care coordination, improving
practice efficiencies, improving practice efficiencies and clinical outcomes,
and tracking data over time. Several
technologies are used to manage patient data. Electronic health records (EHRs)
contain information on the patient's medical history, allergies, medications,
and laboratory charges. These technologies have many benefits, including
increased efficiency and eliminating paperwork.
Electronic health
records also enable healthcare providers to share the same information across
departments, reducing the chance of errors. Health management information
systems, such as e-prescribing software, help doctors create and send
prescriptions electronically. These systems have also been beneficial for
doctors and patients alike. With EHRs, doctors can retrieve past test results,
without having to order repeats. This saves both the time and the money of
patients and providers. Using EHRs to automate and streamline healthcare
billing processes is a major advance for health care facilities. However, many
hospitals are still skeptical about adopting this system citing high cost and
lengthy implementation.
An EMR (electronic
medical record) is a digital version of the chart with patient information
stored in a computer and an EHR is a digital record of Healthcare Information
Technology. EMR system can
be expensive, with many small to medium-sized hospitals investing millions of
dollars. This is in addition to the cost of training personnel to use these
systems and the associated software applications. Furthermore, EMR systems
require a significant amount of hospital infrastructure upgrades. The learning
curve associated with these systems & services can lower productivity and revenues, and could
require hospital infrastructure upgrades. For this reason, implementing new
health information systems isn't a good idea for all hospitals.
