To collect a sample, patients should remove their nasal mask and blow their nose into a tissue. After the tissue is removed, patients should insert the swab along the septum to the nasopharynx. Once the swab is in place, rotate it until no secretions are left behind. The patient should remain still and tilt their head backward to allow for easier access. The swab should be inserted along the septum and into the nasopharynx until there is no more resistance. COVID-19 nasal swab test has been the bottleneck in the field of influenza prevention and control, and thus, there is an increasing demand worldwide.

The rising number of cases worldwide has stirred the demand for nasopharyngeal swabs, and thus, rapid research is being carried out to make low cost and accurate COVID-19 nasal swab tests. As of February 21, 2022, the United States had performed almost 939 million tests for COVID-19, the highest number of any country worldwide.
