Saline Laxatives are the medications used for treatment of recurring constipation and enhance bowel activity
Saline Laxatives are one type of stool softener and are commonly used to treat constipation. The main advantage of using a saline laxative is that it allows for easy administration, and also that there are no unpleasant side effects to be expected. It has been measured that when 10% of the dose of the agent is passed into the intestine it will not have any effect.
As a result, this type of laxative is rarely used except in very acute conditions. The active ingredients in Saline Laxatives include magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, and potassium chloride. This magnesium salt is combined with an organic acid, and either calcium carbonate or tannic acid is added to it to produce a product called sodium chlorite.
Saline Laxatives are salts containing highly concentrated ions which do not cross the colon walls and stay within the intestine. Saline laxatives also cause water retention in the gut by osmotic pressure, increasing the bulk of stool. They act on nerve centers in the gut (nerve cells) to calm them, relieve muscle spasms, and reduce inflammation.
