Robotaxi; Autonomous Vehicle that Aims to Provide On-Demand Ride-Sharing Services
Robotaxi, also known as a driverless taxi or a self-driving taxi, is an autonomous vehicle/car operated for a ridesharing company to provide on-demand ride-sharing services. These vehicles usually belong to the four and five levels of autonomy (SAE automation level 4 or 5) and are equipped with cameras, RADAR (Radio Detection and Ranging), LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), and other sensors. Robotaxis (fully autonomous) are still very rare anywhere in the world, and it will take a combination of updated technology and regulation before they become relatively common worldwide.
California has long been ground zero for autonomous vehicle testing in the United States, but California has some of the most stringent rules and regulations in the country for AV operators. In July 2021, Lyft teamed up with Ford and Agro to bring Robotaxis to select U.S. cities, with the ultimate goal of dispatching 1,000 self-driving vehicles (robotaxis) in the six metropolitan areas, including Washington, D.C. Moreover, the California Department of Motor Vehicles has officially issued a permit to Baidu USA to begin testing driverless vehicles on public roads in Sunnyvale, California.
