Smart Contact Lens: Lens with a Built-In Display That Offers Information without Interrupting Your Focus

Smart Contact Lens

Contact Lenses are thin, plastic lenses usually placed directly on your eyes. Contact lenses were first invented in the 1887 as a method for improving the vision of people with bad eyesight, or those that had undergone surgical procedures to correct vision. Today, contact lenses are popular cosmetic devices used by more than 150 million individuals worldwide, and they are worn to correct poor vision, to augment or enhance vision, or for various therapeutic or cosmetic reasons. Although contact lenses were initially developed as an effective alternative to glasses, today they play an increasingly important role in the visual rehabilitation and corrective aspects of vision care.

The modern-day developments in the field of vision correction have opened new doors for improved vision. Contact Lens can be custom-made to correct nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia), and they are also used to enhance vision for individuals who have experienced eye injury or age-related macular degeneration. Today's contact lenses are safe and effective and offer a host of advantages over eyeglasses, especially when it comes to the convenience and functionality.

Contacts are designed to fit over the iris of the eyes and to rest on top of the cornea. The lens is prescribed by an optical specialist and constructed to fit your particular eye prescription. The most common type of contacts for astigmatism correct both astigmatism and nearsightedness; however there are also some astigmatism lenses available that only correct astigmatism. Astigmatism is a common vision disorder affecting millions of Americans. It results when an object appears blurred when seen with the eyes while the patient has a clear vision. Because the cornea of the eye is slightly irregular, images viewed through astigmatism can appear wavy, softened, or fuzzy.

Contact Lens can be of different types, depending on their specific uses. There are also multi-focal, multifocal, and simple lenses. Simple lenses have small to medium sized shells and a thin lens element that focus light. Multifocal lenses have larger shells and a stronger lens element that focus light in one direction only. The market is also witnessing launch of smart contact lens. In January 2020, U.S.-based Mojo Vision announced that it is developing the Mojo Lens, the world’s first true smart contact lens with a built-in display that gives you timely information without interrupting your focus.
